WVU is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, which guarantees the quality of the University as a whole. Most of West Virginia University's online programs also hold specialized accreditation.
The State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA), establishes uniform standards for distance education for all participating institutions. WVU Online joined SARA in 2014 and offers distance education in all 49 states, districts and territories that participate in SARA.

The highest - and most coveted - rank is the “Doctoral/Very High Research Activity,” category, often referred to simply as “R1” institutions. WVU maintains R-1 status among the most prestigious research universities, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Currently only 3.7% of the degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the U.S. have the Carnegie R1 Classification.
World University Rankings places WVU among the top 2.5% of universities in the world.
Cost to attend WVU is still lower than that of many peer institutions — on average by 15%. WVU offers a quality education at a great price, and aid programs that make our price tag even better. The majority of online degrees and certificates are offered at a flat rate, regardless of residency.
WVU Online assists students from the point of admission through graduation. Dedicated admissions coaches and program advisors will support you throughout your time at WVU Online. In addition, students have access to many support services including online tutoring, 24/7 mental health support, virtual library services, accessibility services, career services and technology assistance.
Making the most of an online education requires a few factors. Time management is needed to prepare a realistic schedule which includes course deadlines, study sessions, commitments, and responsibilities at work and personally. Designate a workspace that will allow you to be comfortable, remove distractions, and that is conducive to learning. Check all technology requirements, have a stable reliable internet connection, and interact in discussions both with your classmates and instructors in your online courses. Schedule breaks to help make study sessions less daunting and more efficient. Utilize the university resources provided virtually which include 24/7 mental health support, library resources, online tutoring, and accessibility services. Most importantly, engage with peers on the online discussion boards and reach out to classmates to say hello and form virtual study groups!
