If you’re intrigued with the learning process and are seeking a career with future growth opportunity, our Educational Psychology, M.A. program is the perfect fit for you. Learning is a continual process from infancy to old age. Graduates of our program understand the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial changes that occur across the lifespan and their impact on learning. Graduates of our program also develop a strong understanding of research methods and design. Have a particular area of interest? Our program offers you the flexibility to choose additional coursework best suited to your intended career path.

Professional preparation will focus on three content areas: learning and instruction; human development; and applied research and data analysis. Students will also be expected to complete core courses, additional electives, and will design and conduct either 1) a project that solves a practical problem in learning or development or 2) a research thesis that investigates a topic of relevance to learning or development.

Program Details

Our program focuses on educating professionals to apply theories and principles of learning, human development, and instruction, and to utilize research methods, designs, and applied data analysis in authentic formal and informal teaching and learning contexts. Graduates are expected to:

  • Apply theories and principles of learning and instruction to current issues in education
  • Demonstrate understanding of ethical issues in educational inquiry
  • Critically evaluate learning research to inform pedagogy and practice
  • Apply empirical inquiry to the study of learning in varied contexts

Admissions

Admission Guidelines

  • A completed WVU online graduate application.
  • Submit an official bachelor degree transcript from a regionally accredited institution and hold a GPA of at least 2.75.
  • A Resume/CV
  • Personal Statement
  • Two Letters of Recommendation

Applications that are incomplete or are submitted after the deadline may be reviewed if openings remain. WVU operates decentralized admissions. Decentralized admissions allow each graduate program to set its own application requirements in addition to the University requirements.

Career Paths

Completing students earn a strong foundation for doctoral study in fields such as educational psychology and the learning sciences. Please note that the program does not provide preparation for graduate study in school psychology.

Completing students are also well-prepared for career opportunities at colleges and universities, social service organizations, research and development centers, and government agencies in areas related to applied assessment, program review, and accreditation; teaching and learning; research support and applied data analysis; and institutional analysis, support, and effectiveness.
