About West Virginia University

Founded in 1867, the University began as the Agricultural College of West Virginia. Just a year later, the state of West Virginia was formed, and the legislature accepted the Morrill Act, securing funds to establish the new land-grant college. In 1868, the institution was renamed West Virginia University.

As a public land-grant institution, WVU is dedicated to providing knowledge and research that enhance the lives and livelihoods of our students, alumni, community partners, and the broader community of West Virginia and beyond. Our mission unites our family of distinct campuses, each contributing to this shared goal.

WVU's main campus is located in Morgantown, West Virginia, with additional campuses in Beckley, Keyser, Charleston, and Martinsburg. With robust in-person learning experiences across these campuses, we also have over 50 years of experience in distance learning. Our dual approach ensures that quality education from the University is accessible to all students, regardless of their location. Today, we continue to expand our reach and impact with WVU Online thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff.
