Curriculum

The B.MdS. degree comprises a core set of courses and three related minors. This structure emphasizes flexibility and problem-solving, allowing you to use specialized knowledge from individual disciplines to tackle real-world challenges.

General Education Foundations

  • F1: Composition and Rhetoric, 3-6 credit hours
    • ENGL 101 & ENGL 102: Introduction to Composition and Rhetoric, and Composition, Rhetoric, and Research
    • or ENGL 103: Accelerated Academic Writing
  • F2A/F2B: Science & Technology, 4-6 credit hours
  • F3: Math & Quantitative Reasoning, 3-4 credit hours
  • F4: Society & Connections, 3 credit hours
  • F5: Human Inquiry & the Past, 3 credit hours
  • F6: The Arts & Creativity, 3 credit hours
  • F7: Global Studies & Diversity, 3 credit hours
  • F8: Focus (may be satisfied by completion of a minor, double major, or dual degree), 9 credit hours

Please note that not all of the GEF courses are offered at all campuses. Students should consult with their advisor or academic department regarding the GEF course offerings available at their campus.

Degree Requirements
Students in the Bachelor of Multidisciplinary Studies (B.MdS.) must complete the WVU General Education Foundations requirements, programmatic requirements, and electives to total a minimum of 120 hours.

  • Capstone Requirement: The university requires the successful completion of a Capstone course. Students in the MDS program must complete MDS 489 with a grade of C- or better during their final year.
  • Writing and Communication Skills Requirement: Multidisciplinary Studies students fulfill the requirement by completing ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 (or ENGL 103), and two additional SpeakWrite Certified Courses™: MDS 101 and MDS 489.
  • Calculation of the GPA in the Major: A minimum GPA of a 2.0 is required in all courses applied to major requirements, with a minimum grade of a C- in MDS 101MDS 279, and MDS 489. Students must meet individual requirements associated with their chosen minors. If a course is repeated, all attempts will be included in the calculation of the GPA, unless the course is eligible for a D/F repeat.

    • MDS 199: Introduction to Multidisciplinary Studies, 3 credit hours
    • MDS 279: Multidisciplinary Theories and Methods, 3 credit hours
    • Any Upper-Division MDS Course*, 3 credit hours
  • Concentration (Total: 45 Credit Hours)
    • Minor One, 15 credit hours
    • Minor Two, 15 credit hours
    • Minor Three, 15 credit hours
  • Capstone Requirement (Total: 3 Credit Hours)
    • MDS 489: Capstone, 3 credit hours
*Except MDS 301, 302 and 303.

Admissions Requirements and Eligibility

  • Incoming freshmen are admitted directly into the major.
  • Transfers from another major at WVU must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • Transfers from another institution must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Admissions Process and How to Apply

Students can apply throughout the year, but the recommended deadlines are:

  • Fall Term: Mid-July
  • Spring Term: Mid-November
  • Summer Term: Mid-April
