Mathematics leaders at all levels of a school organization are vital for ensuring effective mathematics teaching and learning. The Master of Arts in Elementary Mathematics Specialist program is designed to prepare currently licensed teachers to be teacher leaders (either in informal or formal positions) in elementary mathematics.
The design of the courses and experiences included in the program combines opportunities for program participants to engage in: 1) an intensive study of mathematics concepts relevant to the elementary grades; 2) an examination of effective teaching practices for supporting meaningful and equitable mathematics learning for all students; and 3) targeted study of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be an effective teacher leader.
The program is designed for working professionals with courses offered online in both summer and during the school year. Courses during the school year are scheduled in the evenings to accommodate teachers’ work schedules.
