The Sport Management degree, from the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, prepares students to become marketable professionals in the dynamic sport industry. All students complete a required eight course sequence that incorporates foundational content in organizational leadership and management, facilities, marketing, finance, fund raising and development, legal issues, governance, and sociocultural and ethical dimensions of sport. Students also select a two-course area of emphasis allowing for further specialization: 1) Comprehensive Sport Industry Management or 2) Interscholastic Sport Administration. Students in both areas of emphasis graduate with the same degree, a Master’s of Science in Sport Management.
The Comprehensive Sport Industry Management option is designed for working sport management professionals or those seeking initial access to the field. Becoming a part of the WVU Mountaineer family offers the opportunity to build professional networks and advance in your career. Our faculty are internationally recognized with diverse research interests and experiences. Graduates work across all sectors of the sport industry, including youth sport, collegiate and professional athletics, in either an introductory or advanced position within the job market.
The Interscholastic Athletic Administration option is designed for individuals who are currently working or considering careers as athletic directors or faculty managers in interscholastic settings. Students learn the roles, responsibilities, challenges and opportunities associated with a career in sport management. The knowledge, skills, and abilities gained are highly transferable to a broader range of career paths as well. This specialization provides students with the educational experiences needed to qualify them to sit for the certification exam (CAA) administered by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administration Association (NIAAA).
All programs are focused on the application of content in applied work settings (no thesis required). The fully online format provides flexibility for students to complete their courses while balancing demanding schedules. Tuition is offered at the in-state rate for all students to increase affordability and access.
