Duo Two-Factor Authentication Required

You may be prompted the first time you sign into the WVU Portal to enroll in Duo Two-Factor Authentication. Two-factor authentication is a second layer of security besides your username and password for any kind of account. It means you have to confirm your identity in two ways – with something you KNOW and something you HAVE. Duo is the application that WVU is using.

All WVU users (faculty, staff, and students) are required to enroll in this additional security. There are two ways an account can be enrolled: 1. the use of the Duo app on an approved smart device or 2. through the purchase of an approved token.

Setting Up Duo on a Phone or Tablet (Public)

To prepare for set up, make sure you are able to access your device’s app store, and that your phone or tablet has enough storage space to download the Duo Mobile app. You will need access to a computer and have your device in hand to complete setup. Duo Mobile works with Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile 8.1 and 10.

How do I set up Duo on my phone?

  1. Go to your phone’s app store and download the free Duo Mobile app. While it is downloading, move on to the next step.
  2. Using your computer, go to a WVU system that requires you to log in using your WVU username and password (e.g., portal.wvu.edu). After entering your credentials, you’ll be prompted with the Duo setup screen. Click Start setup.
  3. Select Mobile phone and click Continue.
  4. Select the country that provides cellular service to your phone, then enter your phone number. Make sure that you entered it correctly and click the associated box. Click Continue.
  5. Select your type of phone, then click Continue.
  6. Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone, then click I have Duo Mobile Installed on your computer screen.
  7. Follow the platform-specific instructions on your computer screen to activate Duo Mobile on your phone. Hold your phone’s camera up to the QR code on your computer screen. After scanning the activation code successfully, a green checkmark will appear on your computer screen. Click Continue.
  8. Your phone number will display under ‘My Settings & Devices’. From here, you can change how you send the authentication prompt to your phone. The most convenient option is to automatically send your device a Duo push notification, so you don’t have to manually send yourself a notification every time you try to log in to a WVU system. Once you’ve made your selection, click Continue to Login.

How do I set up Duo on a tablet?

  1. Go to your tablet's app store and download the free Duo Mobile app. While it is downloading, move on to the next step.
  2. Using your computer, go to a WVU system that requires you to log in using your WVU username and password (e.g. portal.wvu.edu). After entering your credentials, you’ll be prompted with the Duo setup screen. Click Start setup.
  3. Select Tablet and click Continue.

After scanning the activation code successfully, a green checkmark will appear on your computer screen. Click Continue. If you don't have a camera on your tablet, click Email me an activation link and follow the email instructions.
  7. Your tablet's information will display under My Settings & Devices. From here, you can change how you send the authentication prompt to your tablet. The most convenient option is to automatically send your device a Duo push notification, so you don’t have to manually send yourself a notification every time you try to log in to a WVU system. Once you’ve made your selection, click Continue to Login.
  8. You’re done with setup! Now authenticate with Duo (refer to How to Authenticate with Duo directions).

How to Authenticate with Duo (Public)

After entering your Login credentials, you must use Duo two-factor authentication to verify your identity to access WVU systems. You can choose to authenticate with the Duo Mobile app or enter a passcode.

Your authentication will remain active for 24 hours in this browser session. If you close the browser or switch to another browser, you must authenticate again. After 24 hours, your authentication will expire, and you must re-authenticate.

How do I authenticate with the Duo Mobile app?

  1. From the Duo prompt screen, click Send Me a Push. If you adjusted your settings to automatically send your device a push notification, you don’t need to click this button. Note: If the notification does not appear on your device immediately, open the Duo Mobile app to see the notification. Make sure your device settings are adjusted to receive push notifications.
  2. Open the push notification on your device and tap Approve. Note: If you receive an authentication request that you didn’t initiate, click Deny. Then change your password immediately.

How do I authenticate with a code?

  1. From the Duo prompt screen, click Enter a Passcode.
  2. Acquire a single-use passcode using one of these methods:
    • Open the Duo Mobile app on your smartphone or tablet. Click the Show link next to the hidden passcode to reveal a code. This is a great option of you don't have cellular service or Wi-Fi access.
    • If you have a Duo display token associated with your account, press the green button on your token to generate a code.
  3. Use a backup code that you generated at login.wvu.edu. Make sure to mark off used codes on your printed list.
  4. Enter the passcode and click Log In.
