I provide authentic learning settings where students develop multimedia instructional products for real clients outside the school settings.

Ugur calls his teaching style authentic, collaborative, and technology-enhanced.

“I provide authentic learning settings where students develop multi-media instructional products for real clients outside the school settings,” he says.

“They also pilot and evaluate face-to-face or online tutorials where target audiences have the opportunity to practice with new teaching tools.”

The goal is to give students a better understanding of a learner’s needs in the real world, and also to experience developing actual products to solve instructional problems.

His educational research students critique current studies and develop research proposals and evaluation projects in which they can develop understanding of inquiry, while his teacher education students study emerging technologies and use them in their teaching practices.

“This pushes them to cultivate a critical perspective on effective technology use in various teaching situations,” Kale says.

“I advocate meaningful as opposed to frequent use of technology. It should be used to help us teach in ways that are more effective, and also to help students learn the content better.”

Thoughts About Online Learning
Knowing our students, identifying their existing abilities and knowledge, purposefully placing them in teams, monitoring their team progress, and providing them with online platforms to manage and participate in their projects is essential to support their learning.

Research Interest
My current research efforts center around computational thinking (CT) — a technology-enhanced problem-solving strategy using various computer science concepts. The rapid change in skill requirements for all jobs underscores the urgency of developing CT and code literacy in our children to prepare them for a future where the economy and society both run on complex computer technologies.

About His Students
My graduate students are busy with family and job responsibilities, which is why they choose to pursue their education online. They are looking for opportunities to connect their experiences to the content they learn. Finding the “purpose” is the most important thing for them.
