It’s my hope that every student coming through our programs can answer these two questions: What did you LEARN? and What did you DO?
“I bring contemporary resources into course material to demonstrate practical and useful skills,” Suzanne says.
For example, she shows students how to use Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) tools to educate employees about sexual harassment prevention, and how to use Bureau of Labor Statistics reports to learn more about employment and unemployment trends.
“As I was coming into the field of HR, the Americans with Disabilities Act had recently become a law,” Kitchen says. “There were many opportunities to provide consulting, as well as training and development, to employers and businesses coming into compliance with the ADA. It was natural for me to step into those types of roles in HR.”
This eventually led her to earn an advanced degree and to move into higher education.
She says students studying in the areas of Management and General Business in the John Chambers College of Business and Economics will acquire degrees that are very flexible and customizable for a variety of different kinds of careers.
She is always looking for new ways to improve her students’ experiential education opportunities, including internships, service learning, individual or group simulations, real-life case studies, leadership opportunities and case competitions.

Technology She Utilizes in the Classroom
Personal e-journals for self-reflection, self-correcting quizzes, intricate discussion boards for debates and conversations, and Collaborate for group presentations.
About Her Students
Many students have wonderful life experiences they can (and will) share to help illustrate points covered in courses! It’s important to give students safe spaces to do that, in face-to-face classes, and in online classes.

Work Most Proud Of
I am very proud of my leadership roles in SHRM (Society for Human Resource Management) at the local, state, and national level. I’ve had opportunities to influence college relations for the profession, and to engage with senators and representatives in Washington, DC, and Charleston, WV.
Mentors played a big role in shaping my career in HR, as well as supporting my decision to move into higher education. As a professor, several mentors helped guide me to hone my teaching skill and my decision-making skill. In fact, they still do!!
My favorite books series is Harry Potter, and my favorite book in the series is Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
