Nancy Mullens chose WVU Online because she knew she would get the WVU quality of education with the convenience of the online format.

“I chose to get my Master of Arts degree in Instructional Design and Technology to improve my skills in designing and creating curriculum, while making classroom technology use more efficient,” she says.

“I also wanted to provide a better education to my fifth-grade students.”

Because the program is 100% online, Nancy thought she would feel disconnected from other students and the professors, but she found that was not the case. Instead, the professors went out of their way to keep the students connected.

“Students thinking about taking online classes need to know that time management and organizational skills are vital for success,” she says.

“Prospective students also need to have the courage to speak out, participate, and take control of their own education.”

1. Biggest Challenge
The biggest challenge of completing online courses is making the time to complete assignments, that’s why time management and organizational skills are so important.

2. Things She Didn’t Expect
I did not expect online education to be as personable as it is.

3. How Online Learning Prepared Her for the Future
Online learning has made me a better and more efficient teacher and has helped me to better understand how to teach online courses.

4. Her “Big Three” Things Learned from Online Classes
Improved writing; improved teaching; and improved skills as a curriculum designer and creator.

5. WVU Campus Resources She Found Helpful
The most helpful resources by far are the people that I have found myself associated with during this experience. The WVU library with its vast online resources has also been very helpful.

6. Most Memorable Online Class Experience
The thing I remember the most about the courses is the understanding and compassion of my professors, especially during my first semester when family emergencies made it nearly impossible to complete assignments on time.
