“I was thankful that there were no classroom obligations – to me, those would have been more ‘meetings’ on my already full schedule.”
Chris Caserta earned an undergraduate degree in biological sciences and then worked in various sales and marketing positions. He had been in the workforce for about five years when he realized that what he really wanted to do was lead a marketing communications department and that he would need to get a master’s degree.
He began attending foundational graduate school business classes in the evenings.
“Even though I was highly driven, these were difficult times,” he says. “I would work a full day, quickly grab a drive-thru dinner, and then attend a three-hour of class lecture. I would often combine caffeine with self-will to stay focused and then I would drive home and go to bed. I knew there had to be a better way.”
When Chris discovered online learning, he gladly made the switch. WVU Online’s format meant convenience on his terms. It was no longer necessary to attend a specific lecture, at a specific time, at a specific location, every week.
He chose WVU Online’s Integrated Marketing Communications MS program because it was from a well-known school, had an asynchronous format, was strictly online, and delivered content in a “learn it today, use it tomorrow” format.
For what I wanted to accomplish, choosing the IMC program at WVU was one of the best decisions I could have made.” he says.
Synchronous or asynchronous?
"My preference was an asynchronous format in which I would study the information and then show my understanding."
What is your advice to other online students?
“I have found that online learning from an accredited school is fully accepted in the workplace by employers. Find the online program that is right for you and get it done!”
Why would you recommend WVU Online?
"From my work experience, a student considering an online education needs to make sure the school is well-branded and is a school that employers will respect. WVU Online meets those requirements."
What was the best part of your online experience?
"Realizing that it fit into my already busy life. Knowing that I could learn the material from home (or anywhere) removed an enormous amount of stress for me."
What are your future plans?
"At some point, I would like to get into consulting with one of the many executive marketing leadership firms that are becoming popular nowadays.”
What does the phrase "Mountaineers Go First" mean to you?
"A mountaineer has a set of skills that endures the elements of an ever-changing environment. WVU Mountaineers emulate that gumption, vision, persistence, and consistency"
What is one word to describe this degree program?
"Decisive. - One decisive decision led to a series of others in the most positive ways possible."
What is one word to describe WVU Online?
"Felicitous. - Something that is well chosen or suited to the circumstances."
For advice to WVU Online students or prospective students, Chris would be happy to speak.
