The College of Education and Human Services offers an online Special Education program that allows educators to earn the credentials they need. The program offers these options:

  • Master of Arts degree,
  • Master's degree with certification,
  • Initial teacher certification or endorsement.

Classes are offered online, with live online, interactive sessions. All students pay low in-state tuition regardless of residency. This program meets the professional standards of the Council for Exceptional Children. U.S. News and World Report rated the online graduate education programs in the top 100 programs in the U.S. West Virginia University's Professional Education Preparation Unit is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The program offers six specializations:

  • Autism spectrum disorders,
  • Early childhood special education,
  • Gifted education,
  • Low vision/blindness (visually impaired),
  • Multicategorical special education,
  • Severe/multiple disabilities.

These programs meet State of West Virginia requirements for special education certification. Students from many other states have used these courses to meet their state requirements. Before enrolling in the program, students should consult with local or state agencies about certification requirements that apply specifically to them and confirm that the WVU program will satisfy those requirements.

International students will not be eligible for an I-20 student visa form from West Virginia University for this program.
